Viking Tandem Recument Trikes - It Begins

My neighbor Joe and I both wanted some tandem recumbent trikes so we could ride together with our wives.

We found plans over at Atomic Zombie Extreme Machines for a trike that we both liked. Production trikes go for between $3000 and $6000 bucks a piece. We plan on building these for about $700 each?

Joe got some steel from where he works - 16 gauge 2 inch and 1 1/2 inch square tubing. Usually, the company he works for uses MUCH bigger stuff. A 9 inch cutoff/scrap that I pulled from their dumpster weighs more than 20 feet of the 2 inch tubing we're using!! They build the mounting/transportation bases and housings for big gas compressors.

So far, I've gotten one of the backbones together. It still needs dropouts for the rear wheel, the front cross beam for the two front wheels, and some triangulation, but with only 4 hours invested, it's already starting to look like a bike frame! (A 10 1/2 foot long bike frame)
